Writing Groups
So just what is a Writing Group?
A writing group is a small group of students who meet on a regular basis to write and work on their theses. Groups come in many shapes and sizes and may be interdisciplinary or comprising individuals studying similar areas. They may be groups where you discuss ideas, read each others work or just sit and write in the company of others. Many people find involvement in such groups both motivating and inspiring, as well as valuable in assisting them to get stuck into writing their thesis or analysing the various Tim Tam varieties available.
Getting Involved in a Writing Group...
Many people join up with a group of people after attending one of the GREAT programs such as paragraphs on paper. MUPSA would also like to assist individuals and groups in getting involved. Whether you are an individual looking to form a group or join one, or a group looking for new members, please contact us at postgrad@murdoch.edu.au with your details and what group/ people you are looking for. We will then match up appropriate groups and people. If you prefer, we can either keep your details secure or post a contact email address or similar on the website. Just let us know the who, what, where and when of your group and we will do the rest.

Individuals Looking for a Group
Potential Rooms for Writing Groups
Feedback from our email has highlighted the need for a list of potential areas for writing groups, including access to resources. MUPSA will research into this and attempt to outline potential sources for an appropirate space. One of our main goals this year is to secure a common room space for postgrad students, which can then also be utilised for writing groups. If you have any suggestions on how to acess space with appropriate facilities, please let MUPSA know.
Club Murdoch
Many groups wander down to Club Murdoch as it provides a comfortable environment, tables for the laptop or paper and if you choose wisely, perhaps even a powerpoint! It also provides a relatively quiet environment (depending upon your timeframe), tea, coffee and toilet facilities nearby. The staff are friendly and it is an environment where you can get a break from undergraduates you may be tutoring. The only down side is you tend to feel obligsted to buy a coffee and it can get quite busy at the ten o'clock rush, so get in before that.
The Library Group Study Rooms
The Library has a range of group study rooms scattered throughout the building. Some of these have some powerpoint access points available near the desks. the desks are quite large and can fit a few people around them. The system appears to be first in, best dressed, though there are some areas available for booking. Check with the library desk for more information. Good points include nearby toilet facilities and coffee etc available at Walters cafe.
Rooms on Campus
One of our members has supplied us with rooms and the booking links that they have used in the past. These rooms have tea and coffee facilities nearby.

Other options to help you get writing!
The GREAT program has a number of fantastic seminars and programs to get you up and running with your writing. Cecily Scutt runs sessions which have inspired many to get out their pens or tap the keys including paragraphs on paper. There are also a number of courses run by the Teaching and Learning Centre, designed to assis and guide your writing. For more information on the courses and how to book them, please click on either the GREAT program or TLC link to go to the appropriate page.
