The Teaching and Learning Centre offers various seminars throughout the year for postgraduates. Many of these require you to enrol. For a full listing and to enrol, see the details below for the seminar/workshop you wish to attend. Lectures are run independently and are not associated with the TLC, but are included for general interest.

Writing Workshops for ALL Postgraduate students (Research and coursework) and Honours students


Workshop 1: Writing the Literature Review


This workshop will assist you in clarifying the structure of the Literature Review and effective ways to move from research to writing.
Bring any notes, drafts you have or just a pen and paper and be prepared to do some drafting.

Workshop 2: Clarifying your argument


This workshop will assist you to detail the key points of your argument and logically map out the structure and supporting evidence for your position. Bring any notes, drafts you have or just a pen and paper and be prepared to do some drafting.

Workshop 3: Signposting your argument for the reader


This workshop will assist you to develop your voice in your writing by communicating your intentions clearly to the reader. Bring any notes, drafts you have or just a pen and paper and be prepared to do some drafting.

Workshop 4: Critically reading your own work


It can be difficult to critically assess our own work. Too often we read into the words what we intend, rather than read what we have said. This workshop will assist you in developing your ‘editorial eye’ and being able to pinpoint where your writing needs further refinement. As part of the workshop you will be asked to read other people’s drafts, so bring any notes, drafts you have and be prepared to do some writing.

Workshop 5: Editing to tighten your argument


This workshop will assist you to edit your work on three levels: for the overall structure of the argument, for the internal coherence of paragraphs and for the grammatical correctness of your sentences. Bring along the first draft of a piece of writing.

Teaching Skills Development Program

The Teaching Skills Development Programme is aimed at first time, or
'early career' tutors and consists of skills-focused, short seminars.
Enrolment is essential, and tutors are encouraged to attend the full
programme. We have also developed a Tutor's Support Network that
includes face-to-face and web discussions. For the meeting schedule and

Tertiary Teaching Course

The Teaching & Learning Centre's, Tertiary Teaching Course is
offered during second semester 2006. The course consists of a series of
face-to-face workshops, offered in three two-day blocks. The workshops
will involve presentations by a range of speakers, and discussion among
participants. There is also an assessment component.

Aims
7 To encourage participants to adopt a learning rather than an
instructive paradigm.
7 To enhance understanding of student-centred/focused learning.
7 To introduce constructive alignment as an effective approach to
curriculum development.
7 To encourage on-going reflective practice.
Completion of this course has become part of the probationary criteria
for new academic appointments and is also highly regarded in applications
for academic promotion. The School of Education grants the Tertiary
Teaching Course specific credit (e.g. 6 pts) of the Graduate Diploma in
Education (Tertiary and Adult). Completion of all sections and assessment
is required to meet the probationary criteria for new academic
appointments.

limit to the number of places available, please enrol early.
